Swimming is considered a panacea for all forms of osteoarthritis. Whether knee, hip, shoulder or ankle arthritis – the weightlessness in the water relieves the joints and reduces the body weight that rests on them. You also experience a pleasant massage effect when moving in the water and your heart rate is lowered by the water pressure. Swimming promotes coordination, endurance and muscle development. The latter is further enhanced by the water resistance. Crawl and backstroke swimming are ideal for osteoarthritis. This is because breaststroke puts an unfavorable strain on the joints if you have osteoarthritis of the knee or hip joint.
